Remembering Jimmy Crawford. I cant recall if feb. 2nd. was the day he passed, or if it's Jimmy's birthday.I'll bet Bobbe Seymore know's for sure. I was remembering what a good picker he he was.what a good person, and a great sence of humor. he could keep you in stiches. Semore knows 1000 stories about Jimmy. I'm sure there is a lot of you that know funny storie's about J.C.----R.I.P. J.C. If you have a J.C. story, please post it. thank in advance. miss you Jimmy.--Larry Self

According to Bobbe's latest newsletter:

We are coming up on February 2nd which is the anniversary of the death of Jimmy Crawford. Jimmy was an extremely talented steel guitarist, he was extremely innovative with a style of his own that could sound like Segovia or hard core bluegrass steel guitar.

This man was a true, astounding talent that had the admiration of the world’s finest.

I just posted something about Jimmie in the pedal steel section a day ago when Paul Franklin mentioned "more pedals, more fun"...who else would come to mine after reading that.

One of a kind he was, and I was glad to have known him for all those years....

Jimmy's name comes up regularly. He built my P/P in his basement in '77. Larry I've often told people about the time Jimmy called me and said that he and Russ had just finished an album. He said he wanted to play their version of "Rocky Top" and asked if I would listen to it. I said sure, I was honored that Jimmy even called. Well I sat on the phone and the whole album played. When Rocky Top came back on I hung up and laughed. Jimmy called COLLECT. That was Jimmy Crawford.

Thank's to all of you for replying, and setting me straight. I enjoy all the little things I hear about Jimmy. it bring's a little smile, mixed with a little tear, because we dont have him anymore. he was a funny man. I apoligise for my spelling. sometimes I dont take the time to check it. Ben, I should have called you, or Bobbe. I know you would know. anyhow, J.C. you are not forgotten. R.I.P. Larry Self

I last talked with Jimmie in the early evening of Monday, Jan. 31st, '05; he'd just returned from an unscheduled trip to the hospital and it was clear he was having some serious issues.

Nonetheless, we discussed knee-lever placements on my almost-imminent JCH D-10 (I'll never be quite sure just how far along it actually was, but mine would have been the next one produced). He made some suggestions, told me a couple of jokes, then he said to come by when my tour was finished (I was in Salt Lake City that day) and that my new guitar would be done 'sooner rather than later'....

Thirty-six hours later (I was in Butte, MT by then) my wife phoned me to say that she'd read on the Forum that Jimmie had passed away.

He was a lovely man who took the trouble to help me with my playing in so many ways - but I'll never forget playing something one day (in his basement) that caused him to ask me(!!!) 'How are you doing that?' I walked on air for a couple of days after that!

But what an astounding player he was! A complete musician, and his amazing grasp of the deeper meaning of the E9 tuning - that he selflessly passed on to whoever was interested - set him far above the crowd.

I toured with him in the early '90s and will never forget his kindness.

Jimmie will long be missed by all who knew him.

Speaking of Jimmie's recordings, I can recall him playing me a rough mix of a version of 'Lady Of Spain' with lots of multi-tracked steel as we were riding the 'bus somewhere in England. (Reading Ben's funny anecdote above reminded me - although I only had to lean across the aisle to listen!)

Did this track appear at any point? I have a number of Crawford CDs here, but not this song.

I surely have to agree with everyone about Jimmie. He was a "Dandy" as he might say about someone else he liked. Hanging out in the Crawford basement was always cool. You never knew what would be said, what might be played or who might come by. No matter what, it was always fun.

Jimmie worked on my push-pulls, built me a JCH and was a great friend for over 30 years. Jimmie and Elsie always made me feel like a member of the family. I miss him very much but always smile whenever I think of him. God Bless you Jimmie.

Come on Guy's * Gal's--I know there is a lot more funny stories out there. let us hear from you. Bobbe , get on here and tell a couple of those stories. I cant remember any of his joke's, but he would keep you in stiches. I also have a picture of Sneaky Pete taken in 1953 at w.j.v.a.radio station in South Bend In. where we both played with the same band, but I dont know how to put it on the forum. Larry

"How are my eyes" that was one of Jimmie's favorite sayings

As you know Jimmie had some sort of a condition that caused pretty dark circles under his eyes I'm not sure but I don't think it was serious. Anyway when I worked with him with a couple of different people we would be out setting on the tailgate of my old "Big Blue" truck and right before show time he would look at me or someone else and say "How are my eyes" As if to say he wanted to ,look good for the cameras

I'll tell you someone who could tell us a lot of fun stories about Jimmie and that was his pal Bob Watson. I haven't talked to Bob for a while but if he sees this thread I'm sure he'll pop in. He loved Jimmie as all of us did or actually any one that ever met him. I don't think Jimmie ever met a stranger.

We use to set on the Patio down at Gabes after we were done picking and Jimmie would always ask me if I had any of that old "Tater Juice" and sometimes I would say no not tonight Jimmie and he would say Thank God I was afraid you were going out to your truck and make be take a drink of it
