Rip - Larry Bates

Post by Richard E. Lee »

Its with a heavy heart I send this out to everybody. LARRY BATES, Addison N.Y. passed away on 3/31/11.
Larry, was a well-known steel player and musician, who played with numerous bands. He worked on sound tracks for artist worldwide..and touched so many people with his music. His attractive personality drew the best from everybody he met...just a "classy" guy, and one you felt privileged to be, in his company.
Our hearts go out to his wife, Barb and family..and all those muscians and friends..he left behind. He made lasting impressions on all of us;..he'll never be forgotten. RIP my friend..

Yes Larry was a great guy, and a very fine player... We did several gigs together... Me on guitar and Larry on steel.

Funny how things happen...Larry played the last 5 years or so with Bucky Moon, a country music legend here in central NY...

Bucky died about 6 months ago...

Bill Ely, Buckys bass player of probably 50 years died about 4 months ago, and Larry died last week.

They were all together still gigging up a storm and sounding great maybe 8 months back... All of them died within a few months time, and a year ago all were in pretty good health.... or so it seemed..

I will be playing at a benefit jamboree in May for Larry to help his widow with the monstrous medical bills she faces... RIP Larry, I'll miss you.... bob
I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

My sincere condolences to Barb and all of Larry's family and friends.

I got to be friends with Larry and heard him play a lot of steel when I was a youngster, in 1975-1978. Once I moved away from the Corning, NY area I lost track of him, but my brother got to know him from playing the local music scene. I can still see that broad smile as Larry peered over the blonde, single-neck Sho-Bud he played at the time I knew him. Larry Bates was smooth as silk on pedal steel and 6-string guitars.

A few years ago I was reunited with Larry while at Scotty's. I was with my father-in-law and, as it turns out, the two of them had worked together for many years and retired at about the same time.
