Buddy's Goodrich Volume Pedal

Post by Chris Templeton »

I was recording with my band, "One Step" in the old train station at the Nashville train yard, around 1990, and Buddy was using the IVL MIDI pitch rider and so was I. He lent me his rack that had the IVL head and a Roland sound unit. Goodrich had made Buddy a volume pedal that also had a cord that plugged right from a jack on the case into the volume pedal. The volume pedal also swung right and left for the steel. synth blend.
Having the steel volume slightly louder made for a unique sound, but more importantly for me, It cancelled out the slight attack delay of the synth sound.
Buddy was an expert at using the IVL. He plays it on this jam: https://soundcloud.com/bluespruce8/buddy-ivl
Me, I sounded like a sh***y keyboard player.

Ah! Cool sounds Chris. Thanks for that.

Buddy was quite the innovator that understood and knew how to use equipment to do what he wanted.

I have one of those Goodrich Dual Action 6PV pedals. I'm using it in my keyboard midi rig. I can hard pan one to other of 2 Alesis sound modules or morph between them. There's also one of those Sonuus guitar synth controllers in there I use sometimes for steel or guitar.

It's a cool and rare pedal.

Even at the time, Goodrich wouldn't make one for me. Nice you have one, Jerry.
I was lucky to be at Buddy's with Mike Cass, when Pee Wee Charles first demonstrated the unit.

Well, it may not be quite the same as the one Buddy had. I know they catered to his needs as well they should.

I appreciate you relating all these stories about Buddy. It must have been a special relationship with such an interesting man.

I met Buddy & Peggy at Scotty's, and two seminars at Jeffran ('81 & '83, where he played at end).
Buddy did a C6 week in '85, which I attended. Mike Daily and Steve Paloucek were in it too. I was staying in my van (I've told this tory before) and by the end of week everyone's brains are riddled with Buddy licks.
Buddy put a recording of his licks on a cassette recorder, on a timer, set to go off in the wee hours. under the bunkhouse.
Maybe the students thought they were hearing things.
Another story: I had Jerry Byrd's # and called him from Buddy's, and when he answered I said hello and that someone wanted to speak with him. I handed the phone to Buddy and said it was Jerry. They spoke for a few and when I said goodbye and hung up the phone, Buddy looked at me with "the look" and said, "you're kind of pushy aren't you, Chris?".
